âHer.â
Relief. Itâs quick as my shoulders collapse and my knees threaten to buckle beneath the weight. He wants her. He wants to trade my sweet wife for my damaged daughter, and thereâs not a single thought thatâs preventing me from accepting the deal.
âDaddy?â Her voice is soft. Iâm no longer Pollyx in front of this young man, her friend. âHe canât have me, Daddy. Besides, heâs lying. Heidi is dead.â
I turn on Beverly, her face a mask of indignant rage, and covered in bloodâTannerâs blood. âIt was you.â I always had a feeling she was the one who ran her mother off, but I didnât think she went as far as to kill her. But looking around our house and the rising body count, Iâd be stupid not to.
âPollyx.â Her voice hardens. Iâm Pollyx again. âI wonât go with Colby.â
âHow do you know him?â I shoot the young man a look over my shoulder and find him peering around us, looking into the kitchen.
âI met him in town. He looks like Lyx.â Her chin trembles. âHeidi killed Lyx.â
Understanding dawns on me and horror quickly replaces it. Her fucking doll, the infant she carried around with only one eye. My eyes meet the strangerâs eye once again. I can see why she was drawn to him.
This could work.
âI know how much Lyx meant to you. I had no idea your motherââ
âHeidi,â she growls.
âHeidi,â I amend, âbroke him. Is that why this boy is your friend?â
âYes.â She gives a quick nod. âAnd heâs nice to me. I donât hear him laughing whenever I walk by.â
âThey donât do that.â I shake my head, but my protest falls short. I donât know if they do or not. I donât usually accompany her around town.
âCora is the only one who doesnât.â
âI will take you away from here.â His voice is deep, laced with a quiet confidence, and I canât help but see our similarities. He looks and acts much as I did long ago. âYou donât have to stay in a town where people make you feel like you donât belong.â
âI donât want to leave Dollywoodland.â Beverly pouts. âAll my dollies are here.â
âYou can make more with Colby,â I try to reason.
âNo, she canât,â Colby interjects, his voice hardening. âNo more dolls, Beverly.â
She crosses her arms under her still naked breasts, the same ones she tried to entice me with earlier, and pouts. âI wonât leave.â
âYou can find another hobby,â I suggest, not entirely sure why Colby wonât let her have mannequins. I look at him again, pleading with my eyes. âWhy canât she have mannequins?â
âNot all her dolls are mannequins,â he growls. âYou can ask your wife all about it when we do the exchange.â
The clay.
My body runs cold as I look back into my daughterâs eyes. My flesh and blood, my little girl, is a cold-blooded murderer.
âWhat did you do?â My voice comes out in a hoarse whisper.
âYou werenât finding me any more dollies.â She shrugs, then her eyes flash with something akin to demonic.
